The Del Rio Crash

In the spring of 1955, a pilot named Robert Willingham said he watched a fast object make a sharp turn and come down near the Rio Grande, then returned to find wreckage guarded by soldiers. His own accounts of that day do not fully agree with one another. This is the record of what he told, not a verdict on what came down.

In the spring of 1955 an F-86 pilot named Robert Willingham was escorting B-47 bombers near the Texas-Mexico border. He said a bright fast object crossed his formation, made a ninety-degree turn, threw off sparks and came down just across the Rio Grande near Langtry. By his account he flew back later in a light aircraft and found the site cordoned by Mexican soldiers and men in civilian clothes. He took away a piece of anomalous honeycombed metal that he said later vanished after testing.

What is on the record

The archive resolves four named claimants across two reporting channels and holds three videos. In practice the material rests on Willingham. The other names, George Smithson, Jack Perkins and William Draeger, appear inside his telling rather than as separate voices on the record. His own accounts also differ among themselves. One has him glimpsing small non-human bodies through the hull, three or four of them by one count. Another has him giving contradictory statements about whether he saw any bodies at all. One telling names the aircraft he returned in as a small Aeronca. The archive treats these as versions of one man's story rather than independent confirmations.

No documents accompany the entry. The tellings describe a cover-up, a cordon and later debriefings in which witnesses were told they had not really seen it. None of that is present as paperwork in the file. The place is given as the Mexican side of the river near Langtry, so the record situates the site in Mexico rather than Texas.

Why it sits where it does

Del Rio grades L3, the independent-witness tier, though here the independence is thin. It is carried by testimony on two channels with no primary document behind it, and the testimony is not internally consistent. What crossed the pilots' formation, and what lay under the cordon, is not resolved here.
