Constables Clifford Waycott and Roger Willey were on duty in Devon in the early hours of 24 October 1967 when they saw a cross-shaped object and gave chase in their patrol car. The pursuit is the substance of the case. It ended when the object accelerated away at what they described as terrific speed, silently.

The detail that has kept the account alive is their conclusion rather than their description. Both men came away believing the object was under intelligent control and had been observing the car rather than fleeing it.

What is on the record

One telling on one channel, two named claimants, and no documents. The grade is testimony.

This file previously carried a Ministry of Defence document as corroboration. A full-text check for this batch found that file is the paperwork for the Joyce Bowles case near Winchester, a different county and a different decade, so it has been removed and the case retiered accordingly. That is the honest position: the Devon chase is a well-known British police report, but nothing in our holdings documents it.

The witnesses are the strength here. Two officers on duty, in a marked car, filing an account that attracted national press attention and a certain amount of ridicule, is a costly thing to invent. It is not proof, and the archive's tier does not treat it as such.

Why it sits where it does

L3 on the strength of two named police witnesses to one connected event, carried by a single channel. What outran a Devon patrol car is not resolved here.
