The Star That Stopped over Dravosburg

At 11.15 on the night of 4 July 1948 John Jamnicky Jr. and his wife, sitting on their lawn in Dravosburg, Pennsylvania, watched what looked like a star cross the sky, stop three times and change course before it vanished. He wrote to the War Department five days later and the letter was passed to Project SIGN. This is the record of what one couple reported, not a verdict on what moved over the Pittsburgh district.

On the Fourth of July 1948 John Jamnicky Jr. and his wife sat on a bench on their lawn in Dravosburg, watching the stars and the planes. At 11.15 p.m. they "thought we saw a star moving". It was the colour and size of a star and made no noise. They decided it was a plane. Then it stopped for about eight seconds. It changed course a little, went straight and stopped again for five seconds. After a third stop of at least fifteen seconds it crossed a little more sky and "disappeared completely". When it stood still, he wrote, "you could not tell it from a star".

What is on the record

The account is Jamnicky's own letter of 9 July 1948, addressed "To whom it may concern" at the US War Department. It appears in the Air Materiel Command compilation DOW-UAP-D100, released on 7 August 2026, which spells the town "Dravasburg". In August the Collection Branch at Air Force headquarters sent it to Air Materiel Command for Project SIGN as "a matter pertaining to your Command". Two enclosures are listed: a newspaper clipping of 8 July and a chart. Neither is reproduced. Nothing in the release records a reply, an interview or an evaluation.

His letter explains why he wrote. On 8 July he read that two women had seen "Flying Saucers" in daylight that day, about two and a half miles from his home. He concluded that he too had seen one, because neither a star nor an aeroplane "can travel and stop in the air like this 'thing' did". The same release holds a report that fits. Project SIGN's Incident 161, taken from the McKeesport Daily News of 8 July, has two McKeesport housewives watching a silver "plate" zoom noiselessly toward Kennywood Park. J. Allen Hynek's Project Grudge index later filed that one under balloons or ordinary aircraft. It is a separate daylight sighting, and neither file mentions the other.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Jamnicky signed the letter. His wife is not named and is the only other witness. No independent testimony sits beside it in the archive. The tier measures sourcing, not truth. What stopped three times over Dravosburg is not resolved here.
