The Reflective Underside

In 2020 a US military pilot over the eastern United States reported a "quite small" object with a metallic look and a reflective bottom that "continued in constant direction". Northern Command sent the report to AARO with an infrared clip that AARO says was digitally altered before it arrived. This is the record of what was reported and filmed, not a verdict on what was in the frame.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Reflective Underside is a reported UAP case in Eastern United States (exact place withheld), 2020.
  • A US military pilot reported a "quite small" object that "continued in constant direction", with its shape "indiscernible but the bottom was reflective".
  • The form ticks two boxes, metallic and reflective; almost everything else, including the date and place, is blacked out.
  • Northern Command sent the report with an infrared clip that AARO says "was digitally altered before being reported", in which an area of contrast jumps about the frame as the sensor switches modes.
  • AARO describes 11 seconds of footage but the released clip runs five, and nothing released says which mark in it is the object.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 2 distinct sources and 2 corroborating primary documents.
  • The archive grades it L1 · SINGLE CHANNEL — it is retold more than once, but everything traces back through one channel.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Almost everything is blacked out. What survives of the pilot's own words reads: "apparent object also captured with [redacted]. Appeared quite small. Speed appeared to be [redacted] and continued in constant direction. Shape indiscernible but the bottom was reflective." Of the form's descriptive boxes two are ticked, metallic and reflective. The contact was moving. The reporter was an O-4 flying as pilot, by day.

What is on the record

The archive holds two items from the Department of War's fourth PURSUE release on 10 July 2026. DOW-UAP-D089 is a Range Fouler Debrief Form, which AARO describes as the standard form the US Navy uses to record an unauthorised intrusion into controlled airspace during operations or training. The Department of the Navy released it in part on 19 May 2026. The squadron, date, time, mission, working area and coordinates are all blacked out, and the release places it only in the eastern United States. The page carries no pin.

DOW-UAP-PR106 is the video paired with it. AARO says US Northern Command submitted the report with 11 seconds of footage "from an infrared sensor aboard a U.S. military platform in 2020", and that the media "was digitally altered before being reported to AARO, and is presented as received." In AARO's description an area of contrast sits above the centre of the frame. Then "the sensor switches modes, causing the area of contrast to rapidly move about within the field-of-view", and it leaves from the top. The clip on DVIDS runs five seconds, not eleven. Its opening frame shows a grey infrared field with a small square box at the centre and two small bright spots near the top edge. Nothing released says which mark, if any, is the object.

Neither record offers an explanation and the release files the report as unresolved.

Why it sits where it does

The page grades L1, one carrier retold. The Navy form and AARO's video are two records of one report, and both reached the archive through one carrier. The pilot is known only as an O-4. Name and unit are withheld, so the record carries no identified witness and cannot reach the official-record tier. No independent testimony sits beside it, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What had the reflective underside is not resolved here.
