Ocean Knoll school sits above a canyon at Encinitas in San Diego County. According to the account the archive holds, at half past eight in the morning in 1977 a silver plate-shaped craft descended into that canyon. About an hour later it rose again and hovered at eye level with the school for around five minutes. The children reported seeing windows and occupants inside, some described as wearing masks or having rough faces. The craft then circled the schoolyard and went straight up out of sight.

The account adds one more thing. The teacher told the children to forget what they had seen.

What is on the record

Five claimants are resolved: a teacher, a girl with binoculars, the ten-year-old daughter of a man from Encinitas, several children from one family, and the group of roughly fifteen children. The last of those is a group attribution rather than fifteen separate accounts, and the difference matters when weighing how independent the observations really are.

Child witnesses are the recurring difficulty in this subject. Children are capable observers and are also more suggestible than adults, particularly in a group and particularly where a teacher is present. The archive's position is the same as ever: it records what was reported and does not adjudicate. What can be said is that the account describes a sustained daylight observation at close range rather than a distant light, and that an adult was among the witnesses.

The instruction to forget is the detail most likely to be remembered and the hardest to weigh. It is reported by the account and no more is known about it.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L3, the archive's tier for multiple independent claimants describing one connected event. There is no photograph, and no school or official report in our holdings. What rose out of the canyon is not resolved here.
