The Highway 82 Landing

The time is given as about half past seven in the evening, and the place is Highway 82 near Grady Crossing, west of Eupora in Mississippi. According to the account the archive holds, Early Patterson and around seven other people watched a craft come down in the centre of the road. It was described as saucer or coffee-cup shaped with a dome, and it rested on glowing legs of light. Patterson's headlights failed and his engine died.

A figure then emerged from the top dome. The account describes it as catfish-like, and records it wiping or working at the side of the craft while a second identical craft hovered above and shone a bright light down. Both made a sound rendered as a wee-oo, and both went up and away to the east.

What is on the record

Seven claimants are resolved, among them Early and Maddie Patterson, Bert Bangham and Milton Sullivan. That is a substantial named group for a roadside encounter, and their number is what carries the file.

The specificity cuts both ways and the honest reading holds both. A figure performing an ordinary maintenance action on the outside of a landed craft is a strange and unusually mundane thing to invent. It is also a description with no physical support behind it whatsoever. A craft resting on a public highway might leave marks on the road surface. The archive holds no examination of it, no photograph and no police report.

The engine and headlight failure is reported by one driver and would be difficult to verify at this distance.
