Two Soldiers and a Revolving Disc at Fort Dix

In the late afternoon of 3 August 1947 two soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey, reported a flying disc about 200 yards up, revolving slowly but moving fast, and said it was neither a kite nor a balloon. A one-paragraph entry in a released Air Force compilation is all the record holds, and it gives no conclusion. This is the record of what the two soldiers reported, not a verdict on what crossed Fort Dix.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 2 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-12; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Charles Casella Jr. and William Truex were serving with the US Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey. In the late afternoon of 3 August 1947 they saw a flying disc. They claimed it was about 200 yards up and revolving slowly, though it was moving rapidly. It was neither a kite nor a balloon, they said.

What is on the record

That is close to the whole of it. The sighting survives as a one-paragraph typed entry in the US Air Force compilation "Analysis of Flying Objects in the US", which the Department of War released in 2026 as DOW-UAP-D087. The entry gives no time beyond the late afternoon and no direction, size or duration. It states no conclusion.

The archive's first machine reading of the page went wrong in two places, and a researcher's reading of the scan corrects both. It had the disc at "300 mph" where the page says "200 yrds in air". It also had it "wobbling like a balloon", where the page says it was neither a kite nor a balloon. The first witness's name is faint on the page. The text-recognition copy gave it as Cottrell, and the scan reads Casella. Checks of NICAP, Hatch, Eberhart and Johnson found no entry, and neither did a web search. It is a different event from the 1978 Fort Dix and McGuire case elsewhere in the archive.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD: a released government record names who saw it. Casella and Truex appear by name in the Air Force's own compilation. Those few typed lines are all the archive has from them, and the tier speaks to their source rather than to the disc. What revolved over Fort Dix is not resolved here.
