The Mirror over Fort Smith

At 17:25 on 16 April 1949 a post office messenger stopped at a traffic light in Fort Smith, Arkansas, saw a brilliant round object like a mirror crossing the sky and climbed out of his car to point it out to the drivers around him. The FBI and the Army both took his report. Project Blue Book's record card files it as an aircraft without naming one. This is the record of what one man reported, not a verdict on what crossed Fort Smith.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Mirror over Fort Smith is a reported UAP case in Intersection of North Eleventh Street and Grand Avenue, Fort Smith, Arkansas, United States, Saturday 16 April 1949, 17:25.
  • A Fort Smith postal messenger stopped at a traffic light saw a brilliant object that "reflected a light in a manner similar to a mirror" and got out of his car to point it out to the other drivers.

  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Wade H. Harrison was delivering special delivery mail and had stopped at the signal light at North Eleventh Street and Grand Avenue. It was 5:25 on the afternoon of Saturday 16 April 1949. He glanced up at the signal and saw "a brilliant object moving in a southeastern direction". He got out of his car and pointed, so that the other drivers waiting at the light could see it too. When the light changed the horns began and he had to move on. He watched the object hold a straight, level course for what he judged three or four miles until a line of trees hid it. It made no sound he could hear over the traffic. It "reflected a light in a manner similar to a mirror".

What is on the record

The FBI's Little Rock office sent the account to the Director on 22 April 1949, in the bureau's flying-disc file 62-HQ-83894. The Department of War released that section in May 2026. The memo describes Harrison as a 52-year-old messenger for the Fort Smith post office with "very good" eyesight, "positive he had observed the object". He first wondered about "some type of a reflector on an airplane, but could not locate or hear a plane anywhere". On North C Street he stopped to ask an Army officer, who had not seen it. The officer said his wife had seen something very similar the day before on the road from Oklahoma City, and that he had seen it too. The memo encloses a front-page item from the Southwest-Times Record of 17 April.

The Army investigated separately, and the Blue Book copy of its report is in the archive with Harrison's name blacked out. Its record card sums up "a huge round mirror" in straight and level flight. The Army report checked scheduled flights and found that the Fort Smith weather office had released no balloons. The card's conclusion is still "AIRCRAFT", and it does not say which one.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Harrison is the only named witness, and the drivers at the light were never identified. The FBI and the Army carry the same account from two agencies, and no independent testimony sits beside them in the archive. The tier measures sourcing, not truth. What passed over Grand Avenue is not resolved here.
