The Great Falls Film

In 1950 Nick Mariana filmed two bright objects crossing the sky over Great Falls, Montana, in one of the earliest UFO motion pictures. The footage surfaces across the government's own study files. This is the record of the film and its analysis, not a verdict on what it shows.

In 1950 Nick Mariana filmed two bright objects over Great Falls, Montana, and the short colour sequence became one of the earliest pieces of UFO motion footage. In the fullest telling he watched two silvery spinning discs, put at about fifty feet across and ten thousand feet up, and his secretary Virginia Raunig saw them too. Another telling has the object passing behind a water tower and cites the film as a believable case.

What is on the record

The film is the case, and the paper trail around it is unusually deep. Eighteen primary government documents reference Great Falls, among them two chapters of the 1968 Condon Report, the 1952–53 scientific advisory panel report on unidentified flying objects, and a run of CIA files released under FOIA. The archive resolves three claimants, though two are spellings of Mariana's own name, so the people behind the film are two: Mariana and Raunig.

The arguments preserved in the tellings are about what the frames show. The aircraft-reflection explanation was put up early, and a Dr Baker is recorded rejecting it on the grounds that the objects' motion was inconsistent with aircraft. The film was analysed to rule out conventional explanations, and no telling in the file records a conclusion that closed the question.

Why it sits where it does

Great Falls grades L4: a named witness paired with primary government documents, at the archive's official-record evidence grade. The grade measures that pairing, not what the two lights were. What the record holds is that a Montana film from 1950 was taken seriously enough to surface in the government's own studies for nearly two decades, and that the analyses it drew never settled it. What the film shows is not resolved here.
