Shining Ovals and Falling 'Spider Web' over Guntown

On 27 October 1949 a woman near Guntown, Mississippi, watched pairs of shiny ovals cross the sky through the afternoon, then saw ash-like flakes and golden strands like spider web drift down onto the trees. She mailed a sample to the Air Force, wrote that it looked like common spider web, and asked that her account be kept from the papers. The file holds an acknowledgement and no evaluation. This is the record of what one woman reported, not a verdict on what passed over Guntown.

The objects came out of the north, high and fast and silent. A woman near Guntown in Lee County watched them from her yard from about 12:30 on 27 October 1949. They were shiny ovals that looked like aluminium, and some flew in pairs joined by a flexible "fastener". One jerked and vanished. Soon afterwards flakes like ash drifted down, then what looked like millions of golden-tinted strands of spider web. They caught on the trees "like Xmas decoration". Single ovals passed every ten or fifteen minutes all afternoon, and some seemed to eject a small bright object like a star. She reported seeing them again on 1 November at about 13:00.

What is on the record

Her letter to Air Materiel Command is in the Project Blue Book file for Guntown. She enclosed a sample, which she wrote "seems to be nothing but common spider web". She described a bitter taste in her mouth that would not go away. She was frightened, and she asked that her account not be given to the papers. The Air Force replied that the information had been included in its study. That is the whole official response.

The same file holds a report from Knoxville, Tennessee, which was checked against weather-balloon releases at Oak Ridge and McGhee-Tyson. It is a separate event. No catalogue outside the file lists Guntown.

Late-October falls of gossamer from ballooning spiders are the well-known natural explanation for webs like these, and her own reading of the sample points the same way. The ovals are a separate question. Nothing in the file addresses them.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The letter is signed and the record names her. She asked in 1949 to be kept out of the press, so this page does not repeat her name. Her school-age daughter is also listed as a witness and is not named either. Her letter is the archive's only account. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What flew over Guntown is not resolved here.
