Four Rocket-programme Passengers and a Silent Object over Highway 17

On the early afternoon of 29 June 1947 three Naval Research Laboratory staff and a wife, driving from Las Cruces to the White Sands V-2 firing grounds, watched a wingless object glint across Highway 17 and vanish northward in about 30 seconds. One of them said he would have taken it for a weather balloon if it had not been moving so fast. This is the record of what four people reported, not a verdict on what crossed the New Mexico desert.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • Four Rocket-programme Passengers and a Silent Object over Highway 17 is a reported UAP case on Highway 17 between Las Cruces and the White Sands V-2 firing grounds, New Mexico, Sunday 29 June 1947, between 13:00 and 13:30.
  • Three Naval Research Laboratory rocket staff and the wife of one of them, driving to the White Sands V-2 firing grounds on 29 June 1947, reported a wingless object that crossed Highway 17 heading north and was lost after about 30 seconds.
  • Spectrograph scientist C. C. Rockwood said he would have taken it for a weather balloon except that it was moving much faster than their car, with no sound or contrail.
  • The witnesses estimated its height at 8,000-10,000 feet, though C. J. Zohn put little credence in the figures.
  • Neither the Army Air Forces check-list (Incident 90) nor the NRL liaison letters gives a conclusion, and the record makes no link to any launch that day.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 2 distinct sources, 2 corroborating primary documents and 4 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-12; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

J. R. Kauke was at the wheel. On Sunday 29 June 1947, between 13:00 and 13:30, he was driving north-east on Highway 17 from Las Cruces towards the White Sands V-2 firing grounds. Kauke was a telemetering supervisor at the Naval Research Laboratory. With him were C. J. Zohn of the laboratory's Rocket Sonde Section, the high-altitude spectrograph scientist C. C. Rockwood and his wife Nancy Rockwood. Kauke saw something in the sky and pointed it out.

It crossed the highway from right to left and headed north at a rapid speed nobody could measure. Its shape was uniform with no wings or other protuberances. Sunlight glinted off it, and the reflection changed as it drew away until they lost it after about 30 seconds. Kauke thought he once saw vapour trails.

What is on the record

The sighting is Incident 90 in the Army Air Forces incident check-lists released by the Department of War in 2026. NRL liaison letters also describe it, and they sit in the FBI's flying-disc file 62-HQ-83894. Zohn estimated a height of about 10,000 feet and Kauke 8,000 to 10,000. Zohn himself put little credence in either figure. Rockwood was interviewed separately. He described a shiny sphere or disc that he would have taken for a weather balloon, except that it was moving much faster than the car. He heard no sound and saw no contrail.

Neither the check-list nor the letters gives a conclusion. The trip itself was to the V-2 range, but the record makes no link to any launch that day. Zohn's initials are uncertain. The letters render them "C. M." or "C. J.", and Eberhart's chronology gives Carl J. Zohn. Eberhart also lists the sighting, as does Overmeire's catalogue.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. One car held everyone the file identifies: Kauke, Zohn and the two Rockwoods. The archive has no telling from any of them outside the official papers. What the four in the car saw over Highway 17 is not resolved here.
