The Hudson Valley Sightings

Through the 1980s, residents of the Hudson Valley in New York State reported an enormous silent object crossing the night sky at low altitude. Descriptions converge on a shape: a boomerang or triangle carrying coloured lights, wide enough by one account to span fifty or sixty yards. Witnesses said it blotted out the stars as it passed, which convinced several that it was one solid body rather than separate lights.

What is on the record

Seven claimants come through three channels and eleven videos. This is a wave rather than a single night, dated across the decade without a firmer bracket, and the tellings describe separate encounters years apart. Charles Buhler, recalling a sighting from his boyhood, described six bright white lights hovering silently in formation over trees on several nights, at a time when men in black were reportedly seen locally. Dave DeLeah followed a silent diamond-shaped craft with white and green lights down the parkway for several miles. Bob and Lori Pozzuoli videotaped the object (the transcript spells the name Pazwoli), described in their telling as a noiseless hovering boomerang about 150 feet from wingtip to wingtip. Another telling credits footage of multiple coloured lights on one large object to a videographer it calls Pizzuli, quite possibly the same man. Lou Allen of JPL suggested that footage might show a blimp.

The strongest single account is also the least verifiable. Elliot Novak and Deborah Studer said blinking lights resolved into a dark triangle the size of a football field that bathed them in bluish-white light, and they got home an hour and a half late. Novak woke with bruising and blood in his urine. The detailed interior material came years later under hypnosis with Budd Hopkins, which is a recall method rather than a source of corroboration.

Ordinary explanations are live in the record itself. One telling says pilots of small aircraft flew in echelon formation over the valley as a prank. Sceptics attributed the object to formations of light planes, a reading the researcher Haines rejected. Another telling makes it Project Brilliant Buzzard, a Boeing craft born of the Strategic Defense Initiative. The claimed totals swing wildly, from hundreds of eyewitnesses to nine thousand sightings to about twenty-five thousand. Those are the sources' own figures, and two of them sit in the claimant list as single entries.

The wave grades L3: multiple independent claimants describing one connected phenomenon. Its two documents are journalism, so it does not climb to the document-corroborated tier. Underneath the totals are years of low, slow, silent objects reported by separate people who kept filming. What they filmed is not resolved here.
