Two Fighter-squadron Officers and Ten Silver Objects over Keflavik

On the afternoon of 4 May 1955 the commander and the adjutant of the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, standing on the terminal ramp at Keflavik Airport in Iceland, watched about ten round objects the colour of oxidised silver arc across the sky in a few seconds. The squadron's intelligence report offered no explanation and Project Blue Book classed it unidentified. This is the record of what two fighter officers reported, not a verdict on what crossed Keflavik.

Lt. Col. Edward J. Stealy commanded the 57th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Keflavik. 1st Lt. Joseph W. Burt was his adjutant. At about 13:38Z on 4 May 1955 the two men were on the ramp at the airport terminal when they saw about ten round objects cross the sky to the east. The objects were the colour of oxidised silver, translucent with a white cast, and did not reflect the light. They were grouped in one area but not in formation. Some moved jerkily within the group. Halfway across, one left a small smoke trail. The whole group crossed in an arc in four to eight seconds and disappeared into cloud.

These were officers whose daily business was jet fighters. They said the objects moved faster than normal jets and did not compare with jet aircraft at all. They put the speed at well over 1,000 knots.

What is on the record

The report came from the squadron's intelligence officer and went to Project Blue Book, where it is filed as Unknown no. 3523. The intelligence report offers no explanation. The Project 10073 record card concludes Unknown, Unidentified.

The time varies a little between sources. The record card reads 13:38Z, the archive's machine summary 13:36Z. Berliner gives 12:38 p.m. and Johnson 1:38 p.m. Berliner's list of Blue Book unknowns names both officers. NICAP, Eberhart, the Hatch database and Johnson's calendar also carry the case.

A loose group with jerky motion inside it could fit birds such as gulls catching the light. The file does not raise or test that reading. The officers described objects that did not reflect light.

The archive's 1951 Iceland case is a separate event with different witnesses.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD: a released government record names who saw it. The record identifies Stealy and Burt, the squadron's commander and adjutant, and their intelligence officer's report is the archive's only account of the afternoon. The tier measures sourcing, not truth. What crossed the sky over the Keflavik ramp is not resolved here.
