The Object over Kilimanjaro

In February 1951 the crew and passengers of an East African Airways Lodestar bound for Mombasa watched a metallic, bullet-shaped object more than 200 feet long hang near Mount Kilimanjaro for seventeen minutes, rise vertically twice and race east towards the coast. They signed an affidavit when they landed. The account survives in the CIA's files as pages from a 1955 book, and this is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was over the mountain.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Object over Kilimanjaro is a reported UAP case in Near Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanganyika, seen from the Nairobi-Mombasa airliner, Tanzania, 19 February 1951, about 07:20.
  • Captain Jack Bicknell said he timed a metallic, bullet-shaped object more than 200 feet long for seventeen minutes near Mount Kilimanjaro.
  • He reported that it twice rose vertically and then moved east towards the coast at a terrific speed, with no vapour trails.
  • A passenger with binoculars described it as whitish-silver with three vertical black bands, and another thought he saw a row of circular windows.
  • The radio operator and nine passengers signed Bicknell's affidavit after landing at Mombasa, according to the book pages the CIA kept.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 5 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Captain Jack Bicknell timed it for seventeen minutes while his Lodestar held its course. Through binoculars he saw "a metallic, bullet-shaped object which must have been more than 200 feet long" with a large fin-like shape at the rear. Twice it rose vertically, to a final height he put at 40,000 feet. Then it moved east towards the coast "at a terrific speed". There were "definitely no vapour trails". The passenger Captain H. B. Fussell, a Newport sports dealer, had powerful binoculars of his own and saw it whitish-silver with three vertical black bands. After landing at Mombasa, Bicknell wrote an affidavit that the radio operator Merrifield and nine passengers signed.

What is on the record

The record is a CIA file titled "UFO PHOTOS", declassified in 2013. It holds photocopied pages of the British book Flying Saucers and Common Sense, and pages 78 and 79 carry this case. That makes it published writing the CIA kept, not a CIA investigation. Page 77, where the account begins, is not in the file.

Other passengers are quoted. Overstreet, a radio officer from the American freighter Robin Mowbray, thought he saw "a row of circular windows". Its purser Charles J. Vernon called the object two or three times the size of the largest passenger plane. Three people tried to photograph it. Fussell got three blank frames and a fourth showing "a small black object". Vernon's film showed nothing and Overstreet's colour film had not been developed. Fussell rejected Dr Urner Liddel's balloon theory: "The object was definitely metallic." The pages reproduce the Sunday Dispatch's sketch made from Bicknell's drawing.

Project 1947's transcription of the Nairobi Sunday Post dates the flight to 19 February 1951. The accounts disagree on figures. Fussell has it climbing 5,000 feet at a time and leaving at perhaps 400 mph.

Why it sits where it does

The page grades L3 · INDEPENDENT WITNESSES. The record names five people who saw the object, though all of them were aboard one aircraft. It reaches the archive as a book the CIA filed, with no primary government paper beside it. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What hung beside Kilimanjaro is not resolved here.
