The Loring AFB Overflight

Michael Wallace says a silent, erratically moving object showing a few lights hovered near nuclear-armed B-52s and the weapons storage area at Loring Air Force Base in Maine in 1975. Crews were briefed and told to say nothing, he says, and given a cover story about a Canadian helicopter. He describes a night refuelling flight on which the cell leader was ordered to go dark, with radio and lights off, and to intercept the object. The tower radioed increasingly strained updates before losing it on radar.

What is on the record

Two accounts are on file now, in two videos on one channel, and the archive lists three claimants. The second telling comes from Dwayne Arneson, who says Strategic Air Command security police told him on two occasions that UFOs had been seen over the nuclear weapons storage areas at Loring. That is second-hand by its own description and gives no date, so the record cannot tie it to Wallace's night. A third name, Stephen Eichner, appears in the claimant list without a telling in the file that says what he reported. The cell leader, the tower and the rest of Wallace's crew appear only because Wallace describes them.

One document is attached. It comes from the CIA's FOIA collection but the archive classes it as press reporting rather than a government record, so it counts as reporting and not as corroboration. There is no radar tape, no incident report and no Air Force message traffic. What would settle a story like this, an official record of the night in question, is exactly what the file does not have.

The setting is what keeps the case notable. A silent object over a Strategic Air Command base's weapons storage, and a crew told to say nothing about it, is a shape this archive sees more than once. That the shape recurs elsewhere is not evidence that any single telling of it is accurate.

Why it sits where it does

Loring now grades L3, the tier for more than one claimant describing a connected event. It sat at L0 when Wallace's was the only account. The lift is real but modest: one first-hand story, one man repeating what security police told him and a name with no account behind it. What was over the weapons store is not resolved here.
