Two Schoolboys' 'Comet with a Tail' over Ludington

On the afternoon of 20 April 1949 two high-school sophomores in Ludington, Michigan, saw a fast white "flying disc" with a tail "a block long" cross a cloudless sky and vanish over Lake Michigan. The Air Force had the Office of Special Investigations look into it, and OSI closed the file without an explanation. This is the record of what two boys reported, not a verdict on what crossed Ludington.

On the afternoon of Wednesday 20 April 1949 two sophomores from Ludington High School looked up into a cloudless sky over their Michigan town. They saw a white "flying disc" moving fast. To them it looked like a comet with a tail "a block long". It travelled west and disappeared out over Lake Michigan. The next day the Grand Rapids Press ran their story.

What is on the record

The Blue Book file for Ludington is built around that clipping from the Grand Rapids Press of 21 April 1949. Air Materiel Command asked the Office of Special Investigations to look into it together with a report from Homer, Michigan, that had appeared in the Detroit Free Press. The Homer sighting, on 29 April, is a separate event filed alongside. OSI closed the inquiry in September 1949 with all leads exhausted.

The date needs one correction. The paper says "Wednesday afternoon" in its Thursday edition of 21 April, which puts the sighting on the 20th, and NICAP agrees. The record card and the archive's own summary give 21 April. No conclusion is legible on the card, and NICAP lists the case as a Blue Book Unknown. The file tests no ordinary explanation. A daylight fireball and a sunlit contrail are both plausible readings, but nothing in the record settles it either way.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD: a released government record names who saw it. The file names both witnesses. They were high-school sophomores and under 18 at the time, so this page does not. The newspaper clipping is the only account of what they saw. The grade reflects that paper, not what the boys saw. What drew its tail over Lake Michigan is not resolved here.
