The Silver Object over Manitou

On 19 May 1947 railway men on their lunch break at Manitou Springs, Colorado, watched a silver object climb, dive and reverse course every few seconds above the town before it shot away west into the wind. The Air Force logged it as Incident 92. This is the record of what the crew reported, not a verdict on what was over Manitou.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Silver Object over Manitou is a reported UAP case in Pikes Peak Railway, Manitou Springs, Colorado, United States, 19 May 1947, between 12:15 and 13:15.
  • Pikes Peak Railway men on their lunch break reported a silver object that climbed, dived and reversed its flight every few seconds over Manitou Springs.
  • The Air Force check-list says the men were certain it was not a conventional aircraft, and that it was last seen climbing fast to the west almost directly into the wind.
  • The record names three observers, D. A. Hauser, T. J. Smith and L. D. Jamison, all employees of the railway.
  • Hynek's Project Grudge index grouped the incident with balloons or ordinary aircraft, and NICAP reports the Blue Book classification as possible birds.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 3 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

It was lunchtime at the Pikes Peak Railway when one of the train crew pointed up. A silver object was coming in fast from the north-east. It looked extremely small, and it flew higher than the top of Manitou Mountain, which rises about 1,000 feet above the town. Even through low-power binoculars no one could make out a shape. Just north of Manitou it stayed in the area for several minutes. It climbed, dived and reversed its flight path. "This happened every few seconds." At times it seemed to hover. Then it climbed very fast towards the west, almost directly into the wind. The sky was clear and there was no wind on the ground. "The men were certain that the object was not a conventional aircraft."

What is on the record

The report is Incident 92 in the Air Force's incident summaries, published by the Department of War on 12 June 2026 as DOW-UAP-D087. Its check-list names three observers, D. A. Hauser, T. J. Smith and L. D. Jamison, all employees of the railway, and times the sighting between 12:15 and 13:15. Two of the men thought more than one object might have been in the sky.

Outside the release, the NICAP report on the 1947 wave records seven railway employees, a Denver Post story of 28 June and interviews by the 15th Air Force. It puts the display at about twenty minutes, against the check-list's "several minutes".

Two ordinary answers sit in the files. J. Allen Hynek's evaluation index for Project Grudge lists Incident 92 among cases suggestive of balloons or ordinary aircraft. NICAP reports the Blue Book classification as possible birds. Neither is argued in the released pages.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The witnesses are three named railway men, off duty at lunch. No independent testimony sits beside the Air Force check-list in the archive, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What was over Manitou is not resolved here.
