The Glass Tunnels

Around the turn of the century, Mars Global Surveyor frames of ribbed, tube-like forms lying in Martian valleys were read by some as translucent tunnels, and Arthur C. Clarke called one of them extraordinary. This is the record of what was in the frames and what was said about them, not a verdict on what lies in those valleys.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Glass Tunnels is a reported UAP case on Mars, circa 1998–2000.
  • Arthur C. Clarke said he was still waiting for an explanation of 'that extraordinary glass worm on Mars' and called it one of the most incredible images ever to come from space.
  • The telling holds that HiRISE later imaged the same forms and that their reflectivity matched across two orbiters, which it takes to rule out a camera artefact.
  • Bernard Haisch, asked about the image, called it a dune train shaped by wind in a valley and said the tube is an illusion; the higher-resolution record agrees with him.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The Mars Orbiter Camera on Mars Global Surveyor returned, in its early years, frames in which the floors of valleys and crevices carry long banded forms that catch the light as if glazed. Richard Hoagland circulated the frame beside a line from Arthur C. Clarke, who said he was still waiting for an explanation of "that extraordinary glass worm on Mars" and called it one of the most incredible images ever to come from space. The telling the archive holds says the HiRISE camera later imaged the same forms, that their reflectivity matched across two orbiters, and that the match rules out a camera artefact.

What is on the record

A single NewsNation segment carries the case, and the archive resolves no claimants. Clarke and Hoagland are commentators on the frames rather than witnesses of anything. The frames are the witness. The host, shown the picture, asks whether it is a translucent tube with a light inside it. The telling records that Bernard Haisch, asked about the image by Hal Puthoff, called it a dune train shaped by wind in a valley, and that the tube is an illusion: the bright bands are transverse dunes on the valley floor and the form is a hollow, not a ridge. The presenters ask how he could know that for sure. The archive holds no document and no analysis of its own.

Outside the archive's holdings the explanation of record is the one Haisch gave. The frame that started the story is MOC image M04-00291, taken over Acidalia Planitia in August 1999, which Hoagland posted in June 2000; the same ground was re-imaged by the same camera in October 2002 as E21-01421. A second ribbed form, in a crater south of the Parana basin, is the one HiRISE returned to in November 2006 at a resolution the earlier camera could not reach: its shadows showed a depression rather than a raised tube, and the banding resolved into wind-blown ripples lining the floor of a gully. Matching brightness across two cameras is what any real surface does; it says nothing for glass.

The fact sheet spans 1998 to 2000: the orbiter's early mapping and the year the first frame circulated.

Why it sits where it does

The case sits at L0, a single account: one telling on one channel. It stood at L3 while Clarke and Hoagland were counted as claimants, and they were only ever commentators. The frames are public; anyone can pull the original strip. Whether they show anything other than ripples in a gully is not resolved here, though the higher-resolution record says ripples.
