The Melbourne Gas Tank Sightings

Between September 1973 and September 1974, residents of an inner Melbourne neighbourhood reported disc and cigar-shaped craft returning again and again to the same spot above an old gas storage tank, often around half past six in the evening. One witness also reported figures in his bedroom. This is the record of what a street said it kept seeing, not a verdict on what was above the tank.

What makes the Melbourne case unusual is not any single sighting but the pattern. Over roughly a year from September 1973, people living around Macaulay Road and Canning Street reported craft over the same fixture in their skyline, an old gas storage tank. The shapes reported were discs and cigars. They came in low and hovered. They carried coloured lights and they tended to arrive around half past six in the evening. The regularity is the claim. Investigators quoted in the record speculated that whatever was doing this had an interest in the ageing tank itself.

One account stands apart from the rest. Kelvin Shaw reported two tall grey-like figures in his bedroom. That is a different order of claim from a light over a gasholder and the archive keeps it separate rather than folding it into the sighting count.

What is on the record

The archive resolves eight claimants: Frank and Joe Alessio, Wayne Crompton, Jim Cerasiu, Greg Stillman, Kelvin Shaw, John Cherysiou and George Alajouzos. All eight reach the archive through one telling on one channel, carried by a single video. That is the honest shape of this entry. Eight neighbours is a reasonable witness pool, but the archive has only one route to them, and no way to check one account against another.

There are no documents of any class here, no photographs, no film of the craft, and no report from any aviation or civil authority. Nothing in the file establishes that anything unusual was over the tank beyond the residents saying so. A fixed hour and a fixed landmark also fit ordinary aerial traffic on a routine, and the record does not close that off.

Why it sits where it does

The case grades L3 on its claimant count, describing one connected run of events over a year. Without paperwork or authenticated imagery it stays there. What the record holds is a neighbourhood that reported the same thing at the same hour for a year. What was coming back to the tank is not resolved here.
