The Millau Fireballs

At about 8pm on 16 March 1999 a man at Millau in the Aveyron watched two silent balls of fire race across the sky. One seemed to dive into the valley and climb again. This is the record of what one man reported, not a verdict on what crossed the valley.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Millau Fireballs is a reported UAP case in Millau, Aveyron, France, 16 March 1999.
  • A man reported two silent objects racing across the evening sky: a small orange ball and a ball of little flames.
  • One of them is said to have plunged into the valley and then climbed back up.
  • GEIPAN says that path rules out, on the face of it, an atmospheric re-entry.
  • Nearby military installations did not help identify it either, and GEIPAN keeps the case unexplained.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 1 corroborating primary document.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

At about three minutes past eight on the evening of 16 March 1999 a man at Millau was looking west under a clear sky. Two things flashed past very fast. One was a small orange ball. The other was a ball of "flammèches", little tongues of flame. Both flew in straight lines, but one of them seemed to plunge into the valley and then climb back up. There was no sound at all. The whole thing lasted a few seconds.

What is on the record

GEIPAN is the unit of the French space agency CNES that investigates unidentified aerospace phenomena. Its file here is a short description and one statement sheet, with no report or document attached. The sheet logs a man of 40 on a clear night. It notes a trail, colours of orange fire and white, and two separate phenomena moving fast and silently. The field for their size reads only "genre tuyère", something like a jet nozzle.

GEIPAN considered two ordinary explanations and says why neither closed the case. The first was a re-entry, a satellite or rocket stage burning up in the atmosphere. GEIPAN writes that the path of one of the two "écarte a priori l'hypothèse d'une rentrée atmosphérique" (on the face of it rules out an atmospheric re-entry). The second was the military sites nearby. GEIPAN does not name them, and it says their proximity did not let it identify the phenomenon either. It calls the sighting unexplained and keeps the case in class D, which means it investigated and could not explain it.

The dip into the valley is the detail GEIPAN leans on. The record gives no angles or bearings beyond a westward gaze, so the dip cannot be checked.

Why it sits where it does

The page grades L0, a single account. GEIPAN withholds witness identities, so the record carries no identified witness. The tier measures sourcing, not the quality of the inquiry. What crossed the sky over Millau is not resolved here.
