The Montchaboud Vapour Ball
At 10.20pm on 26 July 2012 a retired amateur astronomer on his balcony at Montchaboud, above Vizille in the Isère, saw a faint, swirling ball a little larger than the Moon rise over the mountains and cross to the zenith in seconds without a sound. GEIPAN's head of unit went to interview him and tested seven explanations. None fitted well. This is the record of what one careful observer reported, not a verdict on what crossed his sky.
