The Mullinahone Descent

In February 1969 a couple near Mullinahone in County Tipperary watched a glowing half-spherical object with orange and crimson lights descend silently over a field, wrapped in a bluish fog. About ninety minutes later two people from Carrick-on-Suir reported the same colours against a nearby hill. This is the record of two separate sightings on one night, not a verdict on what came down over that field.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Mullinahone Descent is a reported UAP case in Ireland, 1969.
  • John and Kathleen Shelly watched a glowing half-spherical object with orange and crimson lights, wrapped in bluish fog, come down almost to eye level over a field without a sound.
  • John began to climb a fence towards it; Kathleen, frightened, called him back.
  • About an hour and a half later Ellen O'Donnell and a man recorded as Teddy, who were not with the Shellys, reported the same colours against a hill.
  • A television news crew filmed the witnesses and the field within days; the archive holds the account, not the film.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 4 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Mullinahone is a village in County Tipperary. In February 1969, according to the account the archive holds, John and Kathleen Shelly watched an object descend over a field near them. The archive's transcription gives the surname as Shell; the documented spelling, used in the national broadcaster's film report from that month, is Shelly. The object was half-spherical and glowing, showing orange and crimson lights, and it was surrounded by a bluish fog. It came down almost to eye level and it made no sound. John began to climb a fence towards it. Kathleen, frightened, called him back.

What is on the record

Four claimants are resolved: the Shellys, Ellen O'Donnell, and a man recorded only as Teddy. The structure of the sighting is what gives this modest file its weight. O'Donnell and Teddy were not with the Shellys. They reported seeing the same colours against a hill about an hour and a half later, and their account is recorded as independent of the first.

Two separated observations of the same colours on the same night in the same locality is a pattern that is difficult to produce by suggestion alone, because the second pair were not standing next to the first. That is the archive's reason for grading this above a single report, and it is worth being precise that the corroboration is of colour and location rather than of shape.

Outside the archive's own holdings, the case is unusually well recorded for a rural Irish sighting: a television news crew filmed the witnesses and the field within days. The archive holds the account, not the film.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L3, the archive's tier for multiple independent claimants describing one connected event. Two separated sightings on one night carry it there. There is no photograph and no official report in our holdings. What settled over that field is not resolved here.
