The Nakhon Phanom Road Helicopter

Early on 24 August 1969 an American OV-10 pilot on final approach to Nakhon Phanom in Thailand saw what looked like a helicopter with folded rotor blades on a country road, people gathered round it and a large light, then watched it being moved into the trees. Air Force investigators traced it to a night religious procession carrying two ceremonial drums on poles, with a villager shining a lantern at the plane. This is the record of what was reported and how it was explained, not a verdict on what was on the road.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Nakhon Phanom Road Helicopter is a reported UAP case on Road near Ban Sang Hin, about five miles north-north-east of Nakhon Phanom RTAFB, 24 August 1969, around midnight to 01:00.
  • An American OV-10 pilot on final approach to Nakhon Phanom reported what looked like a helicopter with folded rotor blades on a Thai country road, people gathered round it and a large light, then saw it moved into the trees.
  • A Royal Thai Army sweep that night and a joint Thai and US Security Police search the next morning found nothing.
  • The Air Force report traced it to a night religious procession carrying two ceremonial drums slung between long poles, with a villager shining a powerful lantern up at the circling plane.
  • The investigating officer conceded the pilot's pinpoint and the procession's route lay a little more than a mile apart, but judged the timing close enough.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The pilot had been asked to look for unidentified flying objects. He was bringing an OV-10 in on final approach to Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base when he saw a light on a stretch of road about five miles north-north-east of the field. Circling, he made out people gathered around a "lattice structure" that he took to be a helicopter with its rotor blades folded. He also reported "a large, omni-directional light". Then he watched the object being moved into the trees beside the road, and he pinpointed the spot to a grid reference.

What is on the record

The source is an Air Force Office of Special Investigations intelligence report, 1 656 0111 69, dated 6 September 1969 and titled "Unknown Entity". A copy sits in the CIA's released files. A Royal Thai Army sweep between two and four in the morning found nothing. Neither did a joint Thai and US Security Police search at eleven.

An informant then described a procession. Some twenty villagers from Ban Sang Hin had walked to a temple in Ban Ram Rat to make an offering. On the way home they carried two large ceremonial drums slung between long poles, and one man carried a powerful electric lantern. When an aircraft circled overhead he shone it upward. When the plane came lower some of the group ran into the woods. A second informant questioned a villager who confirmed the story and the timing.

The approving officer admitted the pilot's pinpoint and the procession's route "do not coincide precisely". They lay a little more than a mile apart. He judged the timing close enough to make the "helicopter" the drums on their poles. The pilot is not named in the report.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The observer is an OV-10 aircrew on a mission, and the report is primary. No independent testimony sits beside it in the archive. The record also carries its own ordinary answer, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What the pilot saw on the road is not resolved here beyond the explanation the Air Force gave.
