The Light on the Road to Fort Carson

In 1996, on a drive with an Army officer from Fort Bliss in Texas to Fort Carson in Colorado, a car died somewhere in New Mexico and a large light shone on the two people inside for about two minutes before its electronics came back. The story survives as a few lines in a 2024 FBI interview with every name withheld. This is the record of what was said, not a verdict on what happened on the road.

The car shut down somewhere in New Mexico. A large light shone on the driver and the passenger as they sat there. After about two minutes the light went away and the vehicle's electronics came back on. The driver had been travelling with an Army officer from Fort Bliss, Texas, to Fort Carson, Colorado. That is the whole of the account.

What is on the record

The source is an FBI FD-1057 record of an interview in October 2024, released by the Department of War on 12 June 2026 as FBI-UAP-D005. The interview is mostly about something else. It records a person's repeated sightings of lights at a property in the northeastern United States since 2021, one of a set of FBI files on that area. The 1996 incident comes up in passing. The interviewee had reached out to someone through LinkedIn, and a question about earlier UFO experiences brought out "an incident that occurred in 1996". The redactions remove every name and leave it unclear which of the two people told the story.

Nothing more is given. There is no month, no road and no place beyond "New Mexico". The light is not described beyond "large", and the file shows no follow-up. The pin on the map is a representative point on the route, not a site. No outside account of the drive has been found.

Why it sits where it does

The archive grades this L0, a single account. One retrospective passage in one interview carries it and nobody in it is named. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What shone on the car in 1996 is not resolved here.
