The Night of the UFOs

One object was reportedly clocked on radar at 25,000 kilometres an hour. Fighter crews were reportedly flanked by roughly seven objects on one side and six on the other. On the night of 19 into 20 May 1986 radars and pilots across the airspace of São José dos Campos, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, the Paraíba Valley and Anápolis are reported to have detected twenty-one unidentified objects. F-5s and Mirages went up from Santa Cruz and Anápolis and none of them made an interception. The objects are described as colour-changing lights that kept their distance and outmanoeuvred the pursuing crews. In one telling they responded to a controller signalling with the runway lights. Near dawn they went out over the sea.

What is on the record

Four videos on two reporting channels carry the night and give twelve claimants. Three of them are groups: Air Force pilots, the fighter crews and radar controllers. Named officers include Colonel Osiris Silva, Commander Alcir, Captains Armindo de Souza Viriato and De Freitas, Lieutenant Kleber, Sergeant Sérgio Mota da Silva, Colonel Aziz and Brigadier Octávio Júlio Moreira Lima. The commander's name also appears as Aucir in one telling.

The tellings agree on the shape of the night and differ on its numbers. Five fighters were scrambled in one account and six in another. Twenty-one objects become six to eight orange points of light in a third. Commander Alcir is said to have seen an orange-reddish light that vanished as he closed on it at over a thousand kilometres an hour. Two tellings say officials offered no explanation, and one says the Air Force stated that the objects behaved in ways it did not understand.

What is missing is the paperwork. The archive holds no Brazilian Air Force documents, no radar plots and no transcripts. An event that turns on instrumentation reaches the file as testimony about instrumentation. The official statement is a claim within a telling. That is a gap in what this archive has indexed rather than a finding about what exists.

Why it sits where it does

The entry grades L3 on multiple claimants describing one connected event. It would be a candidate for the document-corroborated tier if official records were in the file. The file amounts to a consistent account, attributed to named officers, of objects Brazilian radar and pilots could not intercept. What those objects were is not resolved here.
