Three Airmen and a Light Swinging Like a Pendulum over Otis

On the evening of 10 October 1952 three airmen on their barracks porch at Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod watched a blinking white light rise, swing like a pendulum for about 20 minutes and then shoot straight up. Project Blue Book's card said it sounded like a balloon but matched no scheduled launch, and it was carried as Unknown. This is the record of what three airmen reported, not a verdict on what swung over Cape Cod.

S/Sgt Richard W. County, A/1C James M. Barren and A/2C Edward P. Robinson were on the porch of their barracks at Otis Air Force Base in Falmouth at about 18:30 on 10 October 1952. The sky was clear and the visibility unlimited. They saw a blinking white light fly upward. Then it began to swing back and forth like a pendulum, and it kept that up for about 20 minutes. At the end it shot straight up "at a terrific rate of speed". It made no noise and they could see no means of propulsion. An F-94 came in to land while they watched.

What is on the record

The 4707th Defense Wing reported the sighting by teletype. Project Blue Book holds it as Unknown 2155. The teletype gives 23:30 Zulu, which is 18:30 on 10 October in Massachusetts. It also garbles the date as 19 October and disagrees with itself over how long the light was in view.

The record card raises the ordinary answer itself. The description "sounds like balloon, but time doesn't coincide at all with scheduled launches". A light hung beneath a balloon can swing in just this way. With no launch to match it to, the card evaluates the sighting as Unknown. Berliner's list of Blue Book unknowns, NICAP, Hatch's database and Johnson's calendar all carry the case.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Nobody here is anonymous; County, Barren and Robinson are all three named in the file. None of the three has left an account outside the file. The level describes where the account comes from, not whether it is right. What swung over the barracks that evening is not resolved here.
