Between June and July 2023 communities around San Antonio de Pintuyacu, in the Alto Nanay region near Nauta, reported that their villages were being visited by tall figures in armour. The accounts describe the figures arriving on boards that carried them above the ground and in craft shaped like acorns, and describe them trying to cut the faces from people. A fifteen-year-old girl, named in the account as Talia, is said to have come close to being taken and to have had a cutting instrument used on her before neighbours got to her. The reports spread across more than one village and drew an official response.
