The Port Vila Fishermen's Light
Between 19:30 and 20:00 on 7 June 1978 three fishermen in a boat off Port Vila, in what was then the New Hebrides, watched a white light follow the coast and come level with them, trailing coloured flames without a sound, before it swung back towards the shore and vanished. GEIPAN, the French space agency's UAP investigation unit, holds the case as class D, investigated and unexplained. This is the record of what the fishermen reported, not a verdict on what passed their boat.
◆ THE SHORT VERSION
- The Port Vila Fishermen's Light is a reported UAP case in Port Vila, Efate (then New Hebrides), Vanuatu, 7 June 1978.
- Three fishermen in a boat off Port Vila reported a white light that followed the coast, then came level with them showing a craft with coloured flames streaming from its rear, in total silence.
- The object, by their account, changed direction abruptly, headed back towards the coast and vanished suddenly; one witness form puts it the size of a car, 30 to 40 metres away.
- GEIPAN put other sightings that evening down to a probable shooting star, but its investigation ruled out an aircraft, a boat, a sounding balloon and signal lights for the fishermen's object.
- Despite what GEIPAN calls a thorough investigation, the case remains class D: unidentified.
