The Portage County Chase

On 17 April 1966 an Ohio sheriff's deputy and other officers reported chasing a bright object out of Portage County and into Pennsylvania before it climbed away. Two government records sit in the file. This is the record of the pursuit, not a verdict on what they followed.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Portage County Chase is a reported UAP case in Portage County (into Pennsylvania), USA, 17 April 1966.
  • A bright metallic disc rose out of the woods near Ravenna, Ohio, before dawn on 17 April 1966 and hung fifty to a hundred feet above Deputy Dale Spaur's patrol car, by one account.
  • Spaur and other officers said the object led them east out of Portage County into Pennsylvania at up to 103 miles per hour, repeatedly slowing to let the cruiser catch up.
  • When jets were scrambled the Portage County object reportedly shot straight up, in one telling as a jet passed beneath it.

A bright metallic disc rose out of the woods and hung fifty to a hundred feet above the patrol car, by one account. Deputy Dale Spaur and his partner Barney Neff had stopped before dawn on 17 April 1966 to investigate an abandoned car near Ravenna, Ohio. Directed to pursue and photograph the object, they gave chase as it led them east and repeatedly slowed to let the cruiser catch up. Other officers joined as it crossed into Pennsylvania at speeds up to 103 miles per hour. When jets were scrambled it shot straight up, in one telling as a jet passed beneath it. Separately, Mantua's police chief Gerald Buchert is said to have watched and photographed an object of his own.

What is on the record

Three videos on one channel carry the chase. The archive resolves eight claimants. Alongside Spaur, Neff and Buchert are Wayne Houston and Frank Panzanella, an officer each from East Palestine and Conway, and a pair of Portage County sheriff's officers counted as a single entry.

The tellings disagree on the scale. One gives about eighty-five miles, another about eighty-five minutes, and a third seventy-five miles over about eighty minutes. One adds that no vehicle or radio failure occurred.

Two government records sit in the file. The first is from the CIA's FOIA collection. It describes sheriff's deputies from Ravenna chasing a luminous object at 100 miles per hour for nearly 100 miles to Conway in Pennsylvania, joined by two officers from nearby towns who had heard the radio traffic. It records that the Air Force put the object down to a mirage after a four-minute phone interview. The CIA file names none of the officers; the names come from the tellings. The second record comes from the Pentagon's UAP releases and is catalogued as 62-HQ-83894 Section 10. The official answers also differ. One telling says Project Blue Book explained the object as the Echo satellite and Venus. Photographs are described as taken during the chase, but the archive holds them only as part of the account.

Why it sits where it does

Portage County grades L4: named witnesses plus an official record. The tier measures sourcing and never truth, and the paperwork carries a mirage explanation alongside the pursuit. Several officers across two states reported chasing the same low, bright object. What they were following is not resolved here.
