The Malmstrom Missile Shutdown

Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana operated Minuteman ICBM flights during the Cold War — hardened, physically separated launch facilities wired independently of one another. In 1967, in incidents at more than one flight about a week apart, missile officers reported watching their weapons drop from alert to a "no-go" status one after another, deep in their launch-control capsules.

What the officers reported

Former launch officer Robert Salas has stated that, as the missiles went down, security personnel on the surface reported a glowing object hovering over the facility. Officers including Eric Carlson were on duty across the affected flights. The accounts describe multiple missiles disabled at effectively the same time within each incident, across sites that did not share power or signal lines — a simultaneity that base engineering review did not satisfactorily explain.

The case rests on the testimony of the officers who were present, given consistently over many years and, in Salas's case, in signed statements. Why it anchors the nuclear thread

Of every geolocated case in the archive's spatial study, Malmstrom sits among the closest to a nuclear-weapons site — the encounter and the missiles are effectively at the same coordinates. That is why it is a pillar of the nuclear-proximity finding rather than a footnote to it.

The Air Force's own investigation into the failures found no cause, and it was shut down before it produced an explanation. What the officers who were in the capsules describe is more specific than an unexplained fault: a luminous object present at the moment their missiles dropped off alert.
