The Quarouble Railway Landing (1954)

On 10 September 1954 a man near Valenciennes reported a flying saucer landed by the railway, and the French air police found four unusual marks on the sleepers that railway workers' tools could not have made. The same police put the landing down to a smugglers' plane and noted the witness's head injury a year before. This is the record of what a Paris newspaper reported and the CIA translated, not a verdict on what stood on the line at Quarouble.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Quarouble Railway Landing (1954) is a reported UAP case in Quarouble, near Valenciennes, Nord, France (railway level crossing 79), France, 10 September 1954, about 22:30.
  • French air police found four unusual marks on the railway sleepers where a witness near Valenciennes said a flying saucer had landed on 10 September 1954, marks they said railway workers' tools could not have made.
  • The same police put the landing down to a smugglers' plane and noted the witness's head injury a year earlier, Franc-Tireur reported.
  • The archive identifies it with the case of Marius Dewilde at Quarouble, who told the French press of a dark craft on the track and two small figures in suits like divers' gear.
  • Dewilde said a beam of light left him unable to move.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The marks were on the railway sleepers, near the spot the witness pointed to. There were four of them, and according to the French air police they could not have been made by the tools of railway workers. The witness said a flying saucer had come down there on the night of 10 September 1954, near Valenciennes in the north of France. The police had their own answer. They considered it nothing more than the landing of a plane used in smuggling. They also noted that the witness may have been sincere but had suffered a cranial injury a year earlier, with several nervous disturbances since.

What is on the record

The source is a Paris newspaper. Franc-Tireur ran the item on 16 September 1954 under the heading "Believe 'flying saucer' pilots were smugglers". The CIA translated it into a digest of foreign saucer stories from 31 July to 20 September 1954, distributed on 29 October 1954 and marked "unevaluated information". It is a foreign press report the CIA collected, not a CIA investigation.

The item bundles two landings of the same night. The other one, in Corrèze, is a separate event, the Mourieras case, and is not part of this page. The record names neither the witness nor the village. Identifying the Valenciennes landing as the case of Marius Dewilde at Quarouble is ours. The date, the district, the marks on the sleepers, the air police and the earlier head injury all match the French press of those days as collected by the researcher Patrick Gross. In those papers Dewilde, a 34-year-old metalworker who lived by a level crossing, described a dark craft on the track and two small figures in suits like divers' gear. A beam of light, he said, left him unable to move. Gross's papers give five imprints on the sleeper where this record has four.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. One translated newspaper item carries the case and names nobody, so the archive holds no identified witness and no primary document. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What stood on the line at Quarouble is not resolved here.
