Two Wingless 'Belly Tanks' over Redmond

At about nine in the morning on 13 August 1947 two men near the post office in Redmond, Washington, watched two bright, silent objects shaped like aircraft belly tanks streak north-east at what one judged three times a plane's speed. A third witness glimpsed "two silver balls". The FBI's Seattle office reported it to Washington and drew no conclusion. This is the record of what three people reported, not a verdict on what crossed Redmond.

At about 09:00 on 13 August 1947 Sidney Decker was near the post office in Redmond, Washington, when L. R. Brummett pointed something out to him. There were two of them. They were very bright and made no noise. Neither had wings or a tail, and each was tapered at both ends like an aircraft's belly tank. One flew slightly behind and above the other. They were going north-east at extreme speed and higher than planes usually fly, and in about eight seconds they were gone.

Brummett put their speed at three times a plane's at least. He said they were lighter than aluminium. Mrs Mamie English took only a passing glance and saw "two silver balls".

What is on the record

The FBI's Seattle office sent the account to the Director by teletype on 14 August 1947, after the Seattle Post-Intelligencer ran the story. The teletype is in the bureau's flying-disc file 62-HQ-83894, released by the Department of War in 2026. It records what the three said and offers no conclusion.

Hatch's database is the only catalogue that lists the sighting, and it spells Brummett as "Brummond". The record is short and the sighting lasted seconds.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Decker, Brummett and English: those are the three the record identifies. None of the three left any other account that the archive holds. A short teletype earns the grade; it does not explain the sighting. What passed over Redmond that morning is not resolved here.
