The Saint-Émilion Horseshoes (1953)

At about 3.45 in the afternoon of 9 December 1953 Charles Huaut, a carpenter from Saint-Émilion, watched a golden round object hang motionless high over the Gironde for ten minutes. Then without a sound it became several horseshoe shapes about 100 metres across, wrapped in trails of smoke, and the whole thing vanished. The story reached the CIA through a Bordeaux newspaper. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was over the vineyards.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Saint-Émilion Horseshoes (1953) is a reported UAP case in Saint-Émilion, Gironde, France, 9 December 1953, about 15:45.
  • A Saint-Émilion carpenter, Charles Huaut, reported a luminous golden round object hanging motionless at great height for ten minutes on the afternoon of 9 December 1953.
  • It then shifted without a sound into several horseshoe shapes about 100 metres across, wrapped in trails of smoke, and the whole phenomenon vanished, according to the Sud-Ouest report.
  • The newspaper said several other people saw it at the same time; none of them is named.
  • The account survives as a French newspaper item the CIA translated into a 1954 foreign-press digest, not as a CIA investigation.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

For ten minutes the object did not move. Charles Huaut, a carpenter from Saint-Émilion, saw it at about 15.45 on 9 December 1953: luminous, golden and round, poised motionless at a great height. Then it shifted position without a sound. Where there had been one object there were several horseshoe shapes, each about 100 metres across by the report's measure, enveloped in trails of smoke. Then the whole phenomenon was gone. The report adds that several other people saw it at the same time. None of them is named.

What is on the record

The source is a foreign press report the CIA collected, not a CIA investigation. The Bordeaux daily Sud-Ouest carried the story on 12 December 1953 under a heading the CIA translated as "Celestial disk changes form". The agency's report 00-W-29903 was distributed on 20 April 1954 as unevaluated information. It digests saucer stories from newspapers in French, German, Afrikaans and Swedish. The archive holds two scans of that one report. A machine reading of the poorer scan renders the surname "Husut", but the clean page reads "Huaut" both times.

The same item adds a second sighting at about the same hour. A man named Simonneau and his wife at Surgères in Charente-Maritime saw a round object glowing with the colours of the rainbow fly fast from north to south. Surgères lies well over 100 kilometres to the north. The report does not claim the two saw the same thing. This page treats Surgères as context only.

No account of the Saint-Émilion sighting outside the digest was found. The record offers no explanation of any kind. By its own time of day this was a sighting in broad daylight.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. Huaut is a named witness, but he reaches the archive through a newspaper item the CIA collected rather than a primary government record. Both documents are copies of one digest and count as one source. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What hung over Saint-Émilion that afternoon is not resolved here.
