The Anse du Savoyard Object

On the evening of 16 July 1979 two people on Saint-Pierre, in the French islands off Newfoundland, watched a dark trapezoid with four lights at the front hang over the Anse du Savoyard, drift east and then shoot straight up. No aircraft had flown from the island that evening. This is the record of what two witnesses reported, not a verdict on what hung over the cove.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Anse du Savoyard Object is a reported UAP case in Saint-Pierre, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, 16 July 1979.
  • Two people on Saint-Pierre reported a dark trapezoidal object with four lights at the front and a red light at the back hanging over the Anse du Savoyard.

At about 9.40pm on 16 July 1979 two people on Saint-Pierre saw a luminous object in the sky. It was trapezoidal and dark in colour. Four lights ran along its front and a red light sat at the back. At first it hung motionless over the Anse du Savoyard, a cove on the island. Then it moved slowly east. It accelerated suddenly, rose vertically and was gone. Neither witness heard a sound.

What is on the record

GEIPAN is the unit of the French space agency CNES that investigates unidentified aerial phenomena. Its page is titled SAINT-PIERRE ET MIQUELON ( 989) 1979. It classes the case D. Class D means GEIPAN looked into it and could not explain it. The page rates the case strange to very strange with medium to strong consistency.

The description records one check. No aircraft took off from or landed on the island after 8pm. No other testimony was collected. The phenomenon, it says, "reste inexpliqué" (remains unexplained).

The file is thin. It holds two testimony sheets, filed under SAINT-PIERRE (975) 16.07.1979, and no documents. The first records a man of 30. Oddly, it codes the object as a red and amber sphere rather than the trapezoid of the description. GEIPAN names no explanation it weighed beyond local air traffic. It does not say whether ships or aircraft passing offshore were checked. The page gives no size, height or distance for the object. It does not say where on the island the two people stood.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. GEIPAN withholds the identities of its witnesses, so the released record carries no identified witness even though two people saw the object. The tier measures sourcing, not the quality of the investigation. What hovered over the Anse du Savoyard is not resolved here.
