The Florida Scoutmaster Case

On the night of 19 August 1952, near West Palm Beach, Florida, scoutmaster D.S. "Sonny" DesVergers left three scouts waiting in his car after seeing hovering lights over deserted farmland and went into the woods to investigate. He returned with a charred uniform and burns to his face and arms, describing an attack by a hovering, saucer-shaped craft. Investigators found singed vegetation, broken tree limbs with running sap, and soil heated sixteen to eighteen inches below the surface. A barren, burned circle at the site was reportedly still visible more than a year later.

The case was investigated by the Air Force and is documented in its files, which is what anchors it: seven primary government documents, the Condon Report and five CIA-released records among them, corroborate the record. The archive resolves two claimants: DesVergers, and the three scouts who waited in his car, counted as one group entry. The scouts were boys at the time and this page does not name them, and the file does not set out what each of them individually said. The physical elements, the scorched ground and the burns on DesVergers, were examined at the time, and Air Force personnel collected samples from the site and are said to have taken film away with them.

Investigators were divided. One telling in the file describes DesVergers being branded a liar; another describes the physical evidence as difficult to dismiss. Both readings sit in the record, and one account has him disappearing afterwards, a detail the archive cannot verify beyond the telling itself. It became a debated Blue Book case rather than a settled one.
