The Carolina UFO Photographs

Around 1980 a run of sightings was reported across the Carolinas, part of a widely discussed regional wave of low, silent, lit craft. In one account a driver known as the Chief described a disc-shaped object with lights all around and a bright downward beam coming down on him at roughly two hundred feet, hovering some five minutes, then shooting up and away at speed. He said he blinked his landing lights at it and got a response, then chased it at eighty-five to a hundred miles an hour as it pulled away.

What is on the record

The archive resolves five named claimants across two reporting channels, and it holds three videos. The accounts vary. An officer described pursuing a craft that hovered about a hundred yards off with two spotlights, flashing his vehicle lights and receiving an answer from its front headlight, and insisting it was no Delta aircraft. A separate strand, carried on a different channel, has a psychic predicting a UFO over a house before Puharich's son Andy and sceptical cousins reported seeing a huge silent object hover there that night. A fourth telling describes a photographer who said he captured stills and motion film of a craft passing over a house and a cornfield. The craft he filmed had a capsule or bubble on top that raised and lowered, changing its height and apparent shape, and he said the witnesses were too frightened to come forward. That photographic material is described in the account; the archive does not hold it.

Two data problems belong on the page. The canonical names South Carolina while the location field reads North Carolina, and the record does not settle the exact state, so the Carolinas is the honest description. The dating is loose as well, spanning the 1970s and 1980s with a best estimate in the 1970s.

Why it sits where it does

The case grades L3, multiple independent claimants across more than one channel, but a thin one. It carries no documents and no authenticated footage. Photographs are claimed within a telling rather than present in the file. What these witnesses saw is not resolved here.
