The Stirling Tree Craft

On the night of 7 February 1980 two boys in the Adelaide Hills watched a yellow object being chased by a red one over their valley, and a local man reported a yellow boat-shaped craft wedged high in a tree. It was gone before police arrived, leaving broken branches. All coverage comes from the boys' own account. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was in the tree.

A yellow object about eight metres long, shaped like a speedboat, sat wedged thirty to forty metres up a tree. That is what a local man named Daryl Browne reported on the night of Thursday 7 February 1980 in the Adelaide Hills near Stirling and Aldgate. By the time police arrived it had gone. They found only broken branches.

That same night, at about half past nine, two ten-year-old twin brothers had watched a yellow object being chased by a red one over their valley. The archive's telling says the craft moved with no apparent inertia and that the yellow one fled behind a hill. Browne, it says, heard a crash before he found the craft in the tree.

What is on the record

Every account goes back to the twins' story, which one of them now tells publicly as an adult. Retellings cite a local newspaper article from the time that quoted Browne about damaged trees, but the original clipping has not been seen. The police call is reported as part of that same story. No one has offered an explanation.

The archive's row once dated the event only to around 1980. The twins give Thursday 7 February 1980, and the page uses that date.

Browne is one claimant. The twins, entered as a single pair, are the other. The brothers were children at the time and are not named here. Browne's report reaches the archive through their account rather than through a statement of his own that anyone has checked. What the file amounts to is one family's memory with a local man's story inside it.

Why it sits where it does

Stirling grades L3 on those two claimants, both carried by one video. Their independence is weaker than the count suggests, because the twins tell Browne's part too. A contemporary newspaper report would change that, and the archive does not hold one. What the brothers watched over the valley, and what Browne saw in the tree, is not resolved here.
