STS-48's object

In September 1991 a live NASA feed from Discovery's STS-48 mission showed a point of light that seemed to change course after a flash. The telling holds that NASA later restricted its live feeds. This is the record of what was broadcast and claimed, not a verdict on what the camera saw.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • STS-48's object is a reported UAP case in Earth orbit, September 1991.
  • On a live NASA feed from Discovery in September 1991 an object appeared, in the telling's word, to cavort around the shuttle, and a point of light seemed to turn after a flash.
  • The telling holds that NASA restricted live transmissions from its missions afterwards, a claim that rests on the telling alone.
  • NASA's explanation of record is ice particles near the orbiter pushed by a thruster firing; the physicist Jack Kasher argued the main object's pause and turn did not fit a particle in exhaust.
  • The archive's only witness entry is a category, shuttle broadcast viewers, and nobody aboard Discovery is quoted.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

Discovery flew STS-48 in September 1991 and its cameras ran on the public NASA feed. According to the archive's one telling an object appeared to cavort around the shuttle during a live broadcast. The telling adds that NASA later restricted live transmissions from its missions.

What is on the record

The archive holds a single telling from a single channel and resolves one claimant. Its witness entry is a category rather than a person: shuttle broadcast viewers. Nobody aboard Discovery is quoted in the material the archive holds.

Outside the archive's holdings the footage is well known. It was recorded on 15 September 1991 and carried on NASA Select. NASA's explanation of record is that the lights are ice particles near the orbiter and that the flash is an attitude-control thruster firing which pushed them. The space historian James Oberg carries that reading. Against it the physicist Jack Kasher published an analysis arguing that the main object's pause and turn did not fit a particle pushed by exhaust. Both positions are the public debate. The claim that NASA restricted feeds afterwards rests on the telling alone.

Why it sits where it does

This case grades L0: a single account through a single channel. Off Earth almost everything is one camera and one tape, and the tier measures how many independent sources carry a story rather than what the tape shows. What moved on the STS-48 feed is not resolved here.
