The Todmorden Encounter

In 1980 Police Constable Alan Godfrey reported a diamond-shaped craft hovering over Burnley Road outside Todmorden, failed radios and around half an hour he could not account for. The released government files mention it only through a press cutting and researchers' requests. This is the record of what he reported, not a verdict on what was on the road.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Todmorden Encounter is a reported UAP case on Burnley Road, Todmorden, November 1980.
  • Police Constable Alan Godfrey said that in November 1980 a diamond-shaped craft about twenty feet wide hung five feet above Burnley Road near Todmorden, its lower half spinning, while his radios failed.
  • After a bright flash, PC Alan Godfrey said, he found himself further along the Todmorden road with around half an hour he could not account for.
  • Under hypnotic regression PC Alan Godfrey recalled an examination room where a tall bearded humanoid and eight small robotic beings looked him over; his boot was later found split, with a burn mark on his left foot.
  • Three police officers searching moors near Todmorden for stolen motorcycles described a large blue pulsating ball darting below the cloud before it headed towards the town.
  • One account says doctors suggested narcolepsy for PC Alan Godfrey, and that Godfrey himself doubted the physical reality of what he recalled under hypnosis.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 9 distinct sources and 8 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

A diamond-shaped craft about twenty feet wide hung five feet above Burnley Road near Todmorden, blocking it, with its lower half spinning. That is what Police Constable Alan Godfrey described in November 1980. He had been sent out in his patrol car to look into a herd of stray cows and stopped some twenty-five yards short of the thing. His radios failed. There was a bright flash, and the next thing he knew he was further along the road with around half an hour gone.

What is on the record

Under hypnotic regression carried out by a police surgeon, Godfrey recalled a beam of light, a blackout and an examination room where a tall bearded humanoid and eight small robotic beings looked him over. One telling names the overseeing figure Joseph. His boot was later found split, with a burn mark on his left foot. The tellings also describe a scorched patch on the road and displaced cows that had left no hoof prints. One says six of his colleagues had seen a UFO too. A school caretaker reported an object moving up the valley towards Burnley. Another telling has three officers searching the moors for stolen motorcycles, Howard Turnpenny, John Porter and Julie Baxter. They saw a large blue pulsating ball darting below the cloud before it buzzed down and headed towards Todmorden, and it is not tied to Godfrey's hour. The archive treats the regression material as far weaker than the roadside report, since the method's reliability is widely questioned. One telling says doctors suggested narcolepsy, and that Godfrey himself doubted the physical reality of what he recalled under hypnosis.

Three document sources from the released UK Ministry of Defence files sit in the case. They hold a newspaper cutting and two freedom-of-information requests from researchers, and no Ministry report of the encounter. One request, from Dr Clarke, argued that Godfrey's report should have been copied to the Ministry under procedure. Both requests asked for that report. Both times the Ministry answered that it held no report from him. That is not disproof. Godfrey was a West Yorkshire Police officer and police records sit elsewhere.

Eight claimants are resolved, and two of them belong to another story. James Turnbull and Malcolm Agley attach to the death of Zygmunt Adamski, a Polish émigré found dead on a coal heap with unexplained burns coated in an ointment nobody could identify, and an open coroner's verdict. That account shares Godfrey's name and little else with the roadside encounter, and the file carries both.

Why it sits where it does

Todmorden grades L3, the level for independent named witnesses. A cutting and two requests that turned up nothing do not make an official record. The grade rests on the roadside sighting and the named claimants rather than the regression material, and the Adamski names make the count looser than it looks. The tier measures sourcing and never truth. What blocked Burnley Road in 1980 is not resolved here.
