The Twin Falls Formations

On the night of 19 August 1947 a housing official, his wife, a neighbour and three police officers in Twin Falls, Idaho, watched wave after wave of silent lights fly over the overcast city in triangles of three, five, seven and then thirty-five to fifty, before the formations came back the other way. The FBI and the Air Force both logged it. This is the record of what they reported, not a verdict on what crossed the sky over Twin Falls.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Twin Falls Formations is a reported UAP case in Third Avenue North, Twin Falls, Idaho, United States, 19 August 1947, from about 9:30 p.m..
  • Residents and three Twin Falls police officers reported wave after wave of silent lights crossing the overcast city in triangular formations, one of thirty-five to fifty.
  • By the FBI's account three lights on one flank peeled off while the rest closed ranks, and the formations later came back the other way.
  • The witnesses told the FBI the lights were not meteors, birds or reflected city lights and seemed lit from the inside.
  • Air Materiel Command later suggested ground lights reflected from the clouds or birds, and Hynek found nothing astronomical.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 2 distinct sources, 2 corroborating primary documents and 7 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

At about 9:30 on 19 August 1947, H. H. Hedstrom, his wife and their neighbour Mrs Henry Shultz were sitting on the Hedstroms' front porch in Twin Falls. Mrs Hedstrom shouted and pointed. Something had crossed the sky north-east at "a terrific rate of speed". Ten minutes later all three saw ten similar objects in a triangle. Three on the left flank "peeled off" to the north and the rest "appeared to close ranks". Triangles of three and then five or six followed at intervals of a few minutes. Then came a large formation of thirty-five to fifty. Some twenty minutes after that the objects came back south-west in groups of three, five and seven. Mrs Hedstrom called Detective Richard A. Frazier of the Twin Falls police, who lived next door. He came with two fellow officers, M. E. Rountree and Richard Scott. The three watched a group of about twelve pass over in formation. Henry Shultz saw some of the later groups too.

What is on the record

Two agencies recorded it. The FBI's headquarters file 62-HQ-83894, released by the Department of War on 8 May 2026, holds the Butte office's teletype of 20 August and its memo of 2 September. The Air Force entered it as Incident 64 in its incident summaries, released on 12 June 2026 as DOW-UAP-D087. The sky was overcast. The objects were only "a glow going through the air", lit "from the inside" and the colour of ordinary electric lights. No one heard a sound. Frazier and Hedstrom told the FBI they were not meteors, since they flew level. Nor were they ducks or geese, or city lights reflected off the cloud. Nobody else in Twin Falls reported them, and the Butte office closed the case.

The Air Force was less sure. In the Blue Book file for Incident 64, Air Materiel Command called the evidence contradictory and "readily explained" as ground lights reflected from clouds or as birds. J. Allen Hynek found nothing astronomical and noted that the overcast could have reflected signal or search lights.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The witnesses include three named police officers and the city's housing director. No independent testimony sits beside the records in the archive, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What crossed the sky over Twin Falls is not resolved here.
