The Blue Light over Van Nuys

On a July evening in 1948 an Ordnance Reserve captain and his wife in Van Nuys, California, watched a round object glow bluish for about an hour, turn orange at dusk and go dark almost at once. The Air Force's intelligence study of December 1948 says investigation showed it was a balloon carrying cosmic-ray equipment. This is the record of what the couple reported and how the Air Force explained it, not a verdict on what was in the sky.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Blue Light over Van Nuys is a reported UAP case in Van Nuys, San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, California, United States, 22 July 1948 per the study.
  • An Ordnance Reserve captain and his wife watched a round object over Van Nuys glow with "a bluish luminescence" for about an hour, turn orange at sunset and go dark almost at once.
  • It never bobbed like a weather balloon, the Air Force study records, and stayed "quite steady" in a ground wind while it crept through a vertical arc of twenty-five degrees or more.
  • The Air Force's December 1948 study says investigation determined it was "a balloon carrying cosmic ray equipment"; on the evening the investigation settled on, observatory staff had watched a ribbed balloon with a gold plate hanging beneath it.
  • His wife's statement disagreed: "It did not appear to be a balloon or any advertizing device."
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

It hung over the valley for about an hour and never bobbed. Captain Henry Glover of the Ordnance Reserve and his wife first took it for a weather balloon at about 2,000 feet. The wind was blowing on the ground, yet the object stayed "quite steady" as it crept through a vertical arc of twenty-five degrees or more. Glover decided it was no star. It had "a bluish luminescence" and turned orange as the sun set. Then it "ceased to be illuminated almost instantaneously".

What is on the record

The account sits in study 203 of the Air Force's Air Intelligence Division, "Analysis of Flying Object Incidents in the United States". It is dated 10 December 1948 and was released by the Department of War as DOW-UAP-D093. The study does not treat the sighting as a mystery. It is the first of the worked examples it gives of reports Air Materiel Command had identified, set out "for comparison of the information reported by witnesses and true identification of the object involved". The verdict is one sentence: "This object was determined by investigation to have been a balloon carrying cosmic ray equipment."

Project SIGN logged the same sighting as Incident 163 (DOW-UAP-D088). The Blue Book case file shows how the answer was reached. Glover wrote to Air Materiel Command in August, and an investigator interviewed the couple in September. Both remembered a Wednesday evening, which moved the date from 22 to 21 July. That evening a solar observer at Mount Wilson and a telescope demonstrator at Griffith Observatory had watched a ribbed, pear-shaped balloon with a gold rectangular plate hanging beneath it. Mrs Glover was not persuaded. "It did not appear to be a balloon or any advertizing device," her statement says.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. Glover is the only named witness, and no independent testimony sits beside the Air Force papers in the archive. The tier measures sourcing, not truth. The Air Force closed the case as a balloon, although Brad Sparks' catalogue of Blue Book unknowns still lists the 21 July sighting over Van Nuys. What the Glovers watched go dark is not resolved here.
