The Wanaque Reservoir Light

In January 1966 a bright white light was reported diving and hovering over the Wanaque Reservoir in New Jersey for several nights, watched by police, a civil defence director and crowds that jammed the roads. The FBI's file holds the story only as newspaper clippings reprinted in a flying-saucer club's convention programme. This is the record of what was reported, not a verdict on what was over the water.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Wanaque Reservoir Light is a reported UAP case in Wanaque Reservoir, Passaic County, New Jersey, USA, 11-14 January 1966.
  • A bright white disk "two feet in diameter" was reported diving almost into the Wanaque Reservoir and making "neat right angles as if it were using the sky as a chalk board", according to the Herald-News.
  • The paper says police saw it too from their patrol cars, and that it almost came to rest on top of the Raymond Dam before leaving at 4.15 a.m.
  • Crowds ringing the reservoir caused what old-timers called the borough's first traffic jam, the Paterson News reported.
  • The Air Force first called it a helicopter with a strong beacon and later possible views of Venus and Jupiter; the FBI file holds only the press clippings.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 2 distinct sources and 4 distinct claimants on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L3 · MULTI-SOURCE — multiple independent sources attest to it.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

It began at 6.30 on the evening of Tuesday 11 January 1966. The Herald-News described "the bright white disk that streaked across three counties and hovered periodically over the Wanaque Reservoir". Residents, motorists, borough officials and police all looked up. According to the paper the police "too saw the white oval hovering in the heavens from their prowl cars". It was described "as a white and garishly bright disk, two feet in diameter". Observers said it dived almost into the reservoir and made "neat right angles as if it were using the sky as a chalk board". At 2.15 the next morning it was back. Police said it almost came to rest on top of the Raymond Dam before it left at 4.15.

What is on the record

The FBI did not investigate Wanaque. Its UFO file 62-HQ-83894 holds pages from the programme of the Amalgamated Flying Saucer Clubs of America's convention in Reno in July 1966, which reprinted press cuttings about the sightings. The same page appears twice, in Section 10 and in serial 449, and both were released by the Department of War on 8 May 2026. These are newspaper reports, not government findings.

A clipping dated 13 January names more witnesses. Peter Hreno and Dennis Reynicks of Clifton parked on Westbrook Road and saw a point of light hovering above the ice at about 10.40 p.m. When it came back it had "a reddish tinge, bobbing and weaving". Bentley Spencer, the Wanaque civil defence director, had seen the light at about 6 p.m. The Herald-News of 15 January reports that police kept a nightly vigil at the headworks and that NICAP was sending two investigators. The Paterson News of the same day describes what old-timers called the borough's first traffic jam, as crowds ringed the reservoir on Friday night.

The Air Force gave two answers. The Herald-News says it first called the light an official helicopter with a strong beacon. The 13 January clipping says it dismissed the sightings as possible views of Venus and Jupiter.

Why it sits where it does

The page grades L3 · INDEPENDENT WITNESSES. The clippings name a civil defence director and two men from Clifton, and they report police watching from patrol cars. Those identified people make it L3. Both items in the FBI file are 1966 newspaper clippings the Bureau kept, and journalism is never a primary record, so the case cannot reach the official-record tier. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What hovered over the Wanaque Reservoir is not resolved here.
