One Circling the Other

On the night of 27 October 2020 a crew from the 77th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron was sent to identify an unknown contact. It got a radar lock and targeting-pod video of two infrared contacts, one circling the other. "In 1/30th of a second," their form says, "they were gone." This is the record of what the crew reported, not a verdict on what was in the sky.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • One Circling the Other is a reported UAP case in Withheld (CENTCOM area of responsibility), 27 October 2020, 01:12:21Z.
  • A 77th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron crew reported that its targeting pod showed two infrared contacts, one circling the other, and that "in 1/30th of a second, they were gone."
  • The crew had a radar lock but, according to the form, could not get closer than 16.9 nautical miles.
  • What the crew saw by eye was "2x red blinking strobes", and the form records noise jamming at the same time.
  • The form ticks balloon-shaped, metallic and reflective, but it withholds the location and offers no explanation, and the target-pod video was not released.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source, 1 corroborating primary document and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The call came from KINGPIN. "KINGPIN directed ID of unknown contact," the form begins. The crew obtained a radar lock and targeting-pod video but could not get closer than 16.9 nautical miles. "The target pod showed 2 IR significant contacts. One range fouler was circling around the other. In 1/30th of a second, they were gone." What the crew saw by eye was "2x red blinking strobes". They also received noise jamming, indicated by two chevrons. The contacts were at 26,000 feet and not holding altitude, and the boxes ticked describe them as balloon-shaped, metallic, opaque and reflective. First detection was at 248/17 from a reference point the form calls ZIM.

What is on the record

The document is a Range Fouler Debrief Form, DOW-UAP-D58, filed at 01:12Z by an O-3 of the 77 EFS on a mission logged as "DCA", defensive counter-air. AARO describes the form as the one the US Navy uses to record an unauthorised intrusion into controlled airspace during operations or training. US Central Command declassified it in March 2026 and the Department of War published it in its first PURSUE release on 8 May 2026, with the location given as "NA".

The working area and coordinates are blank or redacted. The crew are unnamed and KINGPIN appears only as a callsign. The form mentions target-pod video but none was released with it. Air Force Times reported on 15 October 2020 that the 77th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron had deployed its F-16s from South Carolina to Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. The form itself never says where the flight was, so this page carries no pin.

The form ticks balloon-shaped but offers no explanation for the circling or the disappearance, and the release adds none.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The observers are a fighter crew identified by squadron, with every name withheld. No independent testimony sits beside the form in the archive, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What circled at 26,000 feet is not resolved here.
