The Xinjiang Airliner Fireball (1988)

At 21.35 on 18 March 1988 passengers on airliner No. 2606 from Beijing to Urumqi saw a basketball-sized light "beaming like a searchlight" fly alongside the plane over Hami in Xinjiang, then change direction and split in two inside a green ring. A month later China's state news agency reported that scientists had identified it as a plasma fireball. This is the record of what passengers reported, not a verdict on what flew beside the plane.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Xinjiang Airliner Fireball (1988) is a reported UAP case in Qijiaojing area, Hami, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (in flight), China, 18 March 1988, 21:35.
  • Passengers on airliner No. 2606 from Beijing to Urumqi reported a basketball-sized object beaming like a searchlight flying alongside the plane, Xinhua reported.
  • The object reportedly changed direction and split in two, a smaller ball above and a bean-shaped one below, inside a green ring of light.
  • Scientists at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Atmospheric Physics called it a plasma fireball spinning at high speed, according to the same report.
  • The only record is that Xinhua item as relayed by the US Foreign Broadcast Information Service, and nobody on the flight is named.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 1 distinct source.
  • The archive grades it L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT — the archive holds one account of it, from a single source.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The object kept pace with the airliner as it approached the Qijiaojing area of Hami, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Passengers saw it through the windows. It was about the size of a basketball and threw light like a searchlight. Then it changed direction and split into two: "a smaller ball above and a bean-shaped below". The passengers said a green ring of light surrounded it.

What is on the record

The source is a Xinhua English-language item of 20 April 1988, headed "Scientists identify Xinjiang UFO as plasma fireball". The Foreign Broadcast Information Service picked it up in Okinawa and sent it to US military and intelligence addresses the same day. The CIA released that teletype, and the archive holds two copies of it. It is a Chinese state news report that FBIS relayed, not a CIA investigation. Nobody on the flight is named, and there is no crew account.

The explanation comes from the same report. Scientists at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences called the object "a plasma fireball spinning at high speed in the atmosphere". One of them, Zou Yousuo, described a high-frequency discharge plasma of electrons, ions and neutral particles. He put the green ring down to electric discharge in a high-frequency magnetic field. We found no account of the flight outside these copies, in English or in Chinese.

Why it sits where it does

L0 · SINGLE ACCOUNT. The archive's two documents are copies of the same cable and count as one source. The passengers are unnamed, so the record carries no identified witness. The tier measures sourcing rather than truth, and the only explanation on file is the scientists'. What flew beside flight 2606 is not resolved here.
