WHAT IT IS

Life-size, armless figures with hollow staring eyes and horn-like heads, painted on a canyon wall in Utah. Probably the most alien-looking genuine rock art in North America.

THE ALIEN READING

Viral pieces sell the panel as '8,000-year-old cave paintings showing alien contact'. The limbless bodies, bug eyes and antennae read instantly as greys in suits.

WHAT THE RECORD SAYS

Rock-art researchers read Barrier Canyon Style figures as spirit or shamanic beings from Archaic ritual. Their age is genuinely disputed: estimates run from several thousand years BCE to the first millennium CE.

WHERE IT STANDS

Explained. Historians and archaeologists account for what it shows. The alien reading is a modern one.
