The Ubaid 'Lizard People'
c. 4000 BCE · Ur · Iraq

WHAT IT IS
Slanted eyes, a long narrow head and a mother nursing her child: the most reptilian-looking object to survive from the ancient world, and it is genuine, excavated at Ur.
THE ALIEN READING
Listicles and ancient-astronaut writers read the almond eyes, elongated heads and shoulder pads as a memory of non-human, reptilian visitors. The 'Ubaid lizard men' have been a staple since the 2010s.
WHAT THE RECORD SAYS
Archaeologists call the style 'ophidian' (snake-like). Most figures are female, hair is added in bitumen, and readings run from masks and head-shaping to fertility or protective deities. What they meant is unknown; who made them is not.
WHERE IT STANDS
Explained. Historians and archaeologists account for what it shows. The alien reading is a modern one.
