WHAT IT IS

A daylight snapshot of Templeton's daughter with what looks like a suited figure standing behind her. Analysis reads it as his wife, over-exposed and facing away — though Templeton never accepted that.

THE CASE FOR

Kodak examined the frame and found no manipulation, the photographer was a fireman of good standing who never sought money, and he maintained until his death that nobody stood behind his daughter.

THE CASE AGAINST

The other frames on the roll show his wife present in a pale dress; over-exposure plus a turned back reproduces the 'helmeted suit' exactly, and a 2014 reconstruction matched the image convincingly.

WHERE IT STANDS

Explained. A conventional identification is established in the record.
