The Kenneth Arnold Sighting

In June 1947 a private pilot reported nine objects moving at extraordinary speed near Mount Rainier and described their motion as saucers skipping across water. The press flattened that into "flying saucer" and the modern era had its name. This is the record of what he reported, not a verdict on what he saw.

Kenneth Arnold, a businessman and private pilot, was searching for a downed Marine aircraft near Mount Rainier, Washington in June 1947 when he reported a chain of nine tailless, mirror-flashing objects weaving between Mount Rainier and Mount Adams. He timed them across roughly fifty miles in one minute and forty-two seconds, which he worked out to about 1,700 miles an hour. The saucer comparison was about their motion rather than their shape: in the fuller accounts he describes the objects as pie-plate or crescent shaped, with a convex triangle at the rear.

What the record holds

Arnold's sighting is among the most retold events in this archive, carried by fourteen videos across four channels. The archive resolves three claimants, though one is a second spelling of Arnold's own name, so the independent witnesses are really two. The second is Fred Johnson, a prospector reported to have seen discs in the same region on the same day while his compass needle wove wildly.

The file is document-corroborated. Eighteen primary government records reference the sighting, running from Project Blue Book case papers and the Department of War UAP release through the Condon Report of 1968, with CIA collection files and UK Ministry of Defence papers alongside. That pairing of witness and paperwork is what carries the L4 grade.

Why it is the starting line

Arnold is conventionally treated as the opening of the modern era, not because it is the best-evidenced case but because it supplied the vocabulary and preceded Roswell by weeks. The tellings differ on detail: the speed is variously given as 1,200, 1,400 and 1,700 miles an hour, and one reads the objects as wing-shaped craft with a bite taken out. What stays constant is nine objects at terrific speed, and a description of movement that a headline turned into a disc. What Arnold saw over the Cascades is not resolved here.
