The Maroon Balloon over the Atlantic

At dusk one day in 2020 a US military aircrew flying from a ship over the Atlantic passed a dark maroon object twelve to fifteen feet tall that drifted with the wind and never manoeuvred. Its weapons systems officer thought it looked like "a large, somewhat deformed balloon" but could not confirm it. AARO still lists the report as unresolved. This is the record of what the crew reported and filmed, not a verdict on what was over the sea.

◆ THE SHORT VERSION

  • The Maroon Balloon over the Atlantic is a reported UAP case in Atlantic Ocean (military working area redacted), Atlantic Ocean (US Northern Command area), 2020.
  • A weapons systems officer reported a "darker, maroonish color" object "approximately 12-15ft in height" over the Atlantic in 2020.
  • The crew said it "appeared as a large, somewhat deformed balloon" but that they "were unable to verify that as we passed at the merge".
  • According to the debrief, the object drifted with the wind and the crew "noted no maneuvers or change in direction".
  • AARO pairs the report with 32 seconds of infrared video of an "area of contrast" and still lists it as unresolved.
  • For this case Fractured Realities holds 2 distinct sources, 2 corroborating primary documents and 1 claimant on its resolved list.
  • The archive grades it L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it, the top of our scale, though no independent testimony sits beside that record.

Counts are resolved totals of what sources say, computed 2026-10-03; the reported details above are claims in the record, not findings. A record of reports, not a verdict on what happened.

The object was maroon. "The object itself was a darker, maroonish color, approximately 12-15ft in height," the weapons systems officer wrote. "Structurally, it appeared as a large, somewhat deformed balloon, but we were unable to verify that as we passed at the merge." It seemed to drift south with the wind. The crew found its true direction hard to judge. They "noted no maneuvers or change in direction from the object". Then they flew back to the ship and landed without incident.

What is on the record

The account comes from a Range Fouler Debrief Form released by the Department of War on 10 July 2026 as DOW-UAP-D091. It was filed by an officer holding the rank O-3 whose crew position was WSO. The squadron and date are blacked out. So are the time, the working area, the coordinates and long passages of the narrative. The form's tick-boxes pull in several directions at once. They mark the object as round and square and balloon-shaped and "other". They also call it metallic and opaque and reflective.

AARO pairs the form with 32 seconds of infrared video, DOW-UAP-PR116, submitted by US Northern Command. In its description the sensor zooms and pans to hold an "area of contrast" near the centre of the frame for the whole clip. The released still shows a dark shape held inside the tracking brackets. AARO lists the report as unresolved. The crew's own comparison is the only explanation on file, and they said they could not verify it.

Why it sits where it does

L4 · OFFICIAL RECORD — a released government record names who saw it. The observers are a military aircrew on a sortie from a ship, identified by role with their names withheld. No independent testimony sits beside the report in the archive, and the tier measures sourcing rather than truth. What drifted past the aircraft is not resolved here.
