The Cosford Incident

On the night of 30–31 March 1993 witnesses across Britain, police and RAF personnel among them, reported a large triangular craft, and it was reported over two Royal Air Force stations. The Ministry of Defence investigated. This is the record of what was reported and logged, not a verdict on what crossed the sky.

Over the night of 30–31 March 1993 reports of a large triangular craft came in from across Britain. The main telling puts the witnesses in the hundreds, police officers and RAF personnel among them. It has the craft passing low over RAF Cosford in Shropshire and nearby RAF Shawbury with three bright lights, at times firing a beam down at the ground, and moving at over a thousand miles an hour while showing nothing on radar. Those figures are the telling's own. The speed sits oddly beside another account of the same night, in which the craft crossed at thirty-five to forty miles an hour with a low-frequency hum felt through the body, then shot to the horizon in an instant.

What is on the record

The archive resolves eleven claimants across three videos on two channels. They range from a meteorological officer at RAF Shawbury and two RAF police officers at Cosford to a Cornwall police sergeant, a farmer who found his cows standing silently in a circle, and a driver who chased the craft by car while his family screamed. Two tellings note the date: three years to the night after the Belgian triangle wave.

Nick Pope investigated for the Ministry of Defence. In the telling he ruled out aircraft, satellites, weather balloons, prototype aircraft and the re-entry of the Cosmos 2238 rocket booster, and concluded the event was a true unknown, possibly extraterrestrial. That conclusion is his, reported here as his. Twenty-seven document sources sit in the file, seven of them government primary records from Britain's released defence UFO archive. The other twenty come from the same released files and are classed as reporting, press cuttings among them.

Why it sits where it does

Cosford grades L4: named witnesses, serving officers among them, paired with primary government paperwork. The hundreds are the source's count; eleven claimants are the archive's. What crossed two air stations that night is not resolved here.
